IR and INR Latest Update Training Program Outline

Interventional Radiology (IR) and Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) Training Pathway – Release of the IR and INR Training Program Outlines

The Interventional Radiology (IR) and Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) Training Pathway Working Group released the IR and INR specialist training program outlines for member consultation earlier this year, providing an opportunity for feedback to help inform the development of the training programs. Alongside this, the Programmatic Assessments for the Training Programs were piloted over a three-month period (April – June), with nine trainees across five training sites.

The feedback received has been invaluable to the development of the programs. Based on the feedback, the following changes have been made:

  • Refined the assessment forms to ensure consistency and ease of use
  • Reduced the number of required assessments by 20% across the training program learning domains to ensure feasibility and maximise learning outcomes
  • Refined the MiniCEX assessment to be based on a whole clinic instead of a singular learning domain.

Thank you to all members, trainees, supervisors, and pilot sites who have provided valuable feedback on the IR and INR Training Programs. Your insights have contributed to shaping the future of the training programs and have played a key role in their formalisation.

RANZCR IR and INR Training Program Outlines

The IR and INR Training Pathway Working Group, with expertise from medical educationalists, has reached a key project milestone and is now in the final stages of developing the training program’s handbooks and curricula. This work aims to ensure alignment with best practice and to meet the needs of future trainees.

These documents provide an overview of the training program including, learning domains, programmatic assessments, training requirements, frequently asked questions (FAQ) as well as the roles and responsibilities within the training framework.

Accreditation of Training Settings

A critical piece of work of the IR and INR Training Accreditation Working Group, has been the development of Accreditation Standards and Procedures that are aligned with the AMC model standards. These will be published in the coming months.

Looking ahead, accreditation of training settings is expected to commence in early to mid-2026, marking an important milestone in the implementation of the training programs.
