RANZCR highlights the critical role of radiology in space science and research with the world’s first multi-space agency publication of astronauts’ brain MRI findings in the first-ever crossover session at the 72nd Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). Combining astronauts’ brain MRIs from the NASA, the ESA (European Space Agency), and Roscosmos (Russian Space Agency), this new study reveals that Spaceflight Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) and certain neurological diseases are linked to enlarged perivascular space (PVS) drainage or the brain waste clearance system called ‘glymphatics’ often seen in astronauts with long exposure to microgravity in the International Space Station (ISS).
