Today is the International Day of Radiology (IDoR), a day where we recognise and celebrate the extraordinary role radiology plays in healthcare and the patient journey across Australia and New Zealand.
In this our 90th year, RANZCR is proud that radiology and our members are at the forefront of modern medicine with earlier detection, fewer surgeries, and life-changing treatment outcomes.
IDoR has a special significance in Australia this year as 2025 marks the year that the historic National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), a national initiative where eligible people can now receive screening for lung cancer, commenced which has the potential to save 500 lives each year.
Historically, lung cancer has been diagnosed at a late stage, when treatment options are limited and survival low, with the five-year survival of Stage 4 lung cancer below 5%. However, research has shown that low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.
“The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is Australia’s first new screening program in 20 years and provides a significant step forward in the early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer,” said Professor John Slavotinek, RANZCR President.
