Australian and New Zealand Society of Thoracic Radiology (ANZSTR)

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Thoracic Radiology (ANZSTR) was established as a Special Interest Group of RANZCR in 2017 to provide a platform for RANZCR members with an interest in advancing knowledge, learning or clinical expertise in thoracic radiology.Logo HighRes

The objectives of the group are:

  • Establishing an inclusive network of members interested in the field of thoracic radiology, including cardiac imaging and thoracic intervention. Everyone with an interest is welcome, from generalist to subspecialist.
  • Promoting excellence in thoracic radiology in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Promoting and supporting collaboration, education, and the exchange of knowledge and ideas in the field of thoracic radiology.
  • Liaising with similar international bodies or societies and working collaboratively on matters of common interest.

Significant ANZSTR activities across recent years include consultation regarding occupational dust disease and engineered stone, which has lately emerged as a novel and profound public health threat; recommendations on lung nodules and pulmonary embolism in liaison with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Choosing Wisely Australia; and guidance on imaging and reporting in COVID-19 pneumonia as RANZCR responded to evolutions in the early pandemic.

In late 2023, work began towards the RANZCR/ANZSTR Lung Cancer Screening working group in response to the needs of Cancer Australia, the Department of Health and Aged Care and the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in designing and implementing the Australian National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), which is due to commence in July 2025. The working group comprises a steering committee and multiple subcommittees to encompass work in NLCSP program-level advocacy, CT technique, structured reporting and template composition, guideline development for the reporting of incidental findings, development of radiologist education and training material and advice on the role of relevant software and artificial intelligence tools including the use of a vendor neutral archive. This forms the most substantial input into health policy undertaken by the Special Interest Group since its foundation and will serve to co-design and support this essential development in national-level public health delivery.

RANZCR has established a collaboration agreement between ANZSTR and the Society of Thoracic Radiology (STR) in the USA to work together to promote international networking and exchange of ideas in the field of Thoracic Radiology through the Special Interest Group.
