Before applying to any accredited training position, applicants must register with the College and obtain a College Registration Verification Number (CRVN). Being issued a CRVN confirms that you meet the minimum eligibility requirements to be considered for entry into the training program.
In Australia, all jurisdictions except Victoria advertise clinical radiology training positions externally, with candidates applying directly to hospitals, sites, or networks. The Victorian recruitment process is managed internally by the College.
In New Zealand, the College also conducts a centralised trainee recruitment process.
You can apply if you are an overseas trained doctor as long as you meet the general eligibility criteria.
To be accepted into the College's training program, a candidate must:
(a) Be a graduate of a medical school recognised by the Medical Board of Australia and the Board of RANZCR (or have successfully completed both Part I and Part II AMC examinations for overseas Medical Graduates in Australia).
OR
(b) Be registered in a general scope of practice by the Medical Council of New Zealand.
(c) Be a graduate of a medical school recognised by the registering authority of the country in which the RANZCR training program is conducted and the Board of RANZCR.
AND
(d) Must hold general registration as a medical practitioner by the registering authority recognised by the Board of RANZCR, in the state or country in which RANZCR training program is conducted, without any restriction, conditions, suspension or cancellation (unless otherwise specifically approved in writing by the College).
(e) Have completed at least two full years in an accredited hospital as an intern/resident or equivalent by the planned commencement of the advertised training position.
(f) Eligible to work in the relevant jurisdiction, either Australia, New Zealand or Singapore.
I have not yet completed PGY 2, can I apply for a CRVN?
Yes, you can still apply for a CRVN. If successful, you will be required to provide evidence of completion of PGY2 before you commence training.
Please note that jurisdictions may have additional criteria to submit an employment application.
I am an overseas trained doctor, am I eligible to apply?
The College does not place restrictions based on visa or citizenship status, provided you have the right to live and work in Australia. However, to join the training program, you must secure employment in an accredited position. Most employers or networks require applicants to hold Australian permanent residency or citizenship at the time of application. If you do not hold this status, it is strongly recommended that you check directly with individual sites or networks before applying for a CRVN.
To register as a doctor in Australia please visit the Australian Medical Council (AMC) website.
To register as a doctor in New Zealand please visit the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) website
How many attempts do I have and what counts as an application attempt?
Applications to enter the clinical radiology training program are capped at four non-consecutive attempts. An ‘application’ is considered official and will count towards the number of attempts when a candidate has registered with the College, received a registration number and applied to a minimum of one trainee position.
Within a calendar year, you can apply for multiple positions/jurisdictions and it will still be counted as one attempt.
How can I initiate the College Registration Process?
To initiate the College registration process, candidates must create a profile in the RANZCR system by selecting apply via the RANZCR website. You will be prompted to answer eligibility screening questions, upon meeting the criteria you will complete the registration form and then pay the fee. The College will then verify the eligibility documents and issue a College Registration Verification Number (CRVN).
What documentation will I need to register with RANZCR?
You will need to upload your qualifications, confirmation of medical registration and your PGY 1 and 2 documents via the online application form.
What is the cost of the College registration?
The cost of registering with the College is $800 AUD and will need to be paid on submission of your application. RANZCR fees.
I want to apply for both clinical radiology and radiation oncology positions, do I need two CRVNs.
Yes, you will need a separate CRVN if you are applying for positions within both faculties.
What is the RANZCR Trainee Selection Process?
The RANZCR trainee selection process is a comprehensive system designed to identify and appoint high-calibre candidates for training positions within the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). This process involves multiple stages, including College Registration, the Interview process and appointment of trainees.
CV Scoring Domains and Examples
Shortlisting for interviews will be based on recruitment applications including CV and other relevant jurisdictional requirements. You can download the CV scoring guide below:
2025 Clinical Radiology CV Scoring Guide
Interview
All interviewees applying to the same jurisdiction will be asked the same questions to ensure a fair interview process.
The composition of the interview panels will adhere to jurisdictional HR policies and RANZCR accreditation standards and will endeavour to achieve gender parity and be culturally appropriate.
Competencies
Interview questions have been aligned to a standardised set of domains which outline the key competencies required for clinical radiology training. Due to time restrictions and other factors all competencies may not be assessed.
To ensure timely processing of your CRVN application, please review the acceptable documentation before applying.
Your CRVN is valid for the calendar year, meaning it will expire on 31 December regardless of the date it was issued. Within the CRVNs validity period, you can apply for as many positions as are available.
We recommend applying for a CRVN early in the year, so that you can apply for positions as they come up. If you apply for a CRVN later in the year, there may be less employment applications available.
Jurisdictions' main employment applications for commencement in the following year can run from as early as February to as late as August. Dates are listed at the bottom of this page as they become available.
Depending on the number of positions available, some networks/sites also advertise positions for same year commencement. Generally these are not listed on this webpage.
Apply Now for a CRVN
The CRVN application is used to confirm that you meet the minimum eligibility requirements to be considered for entry into the training program. It does not constitute an application to join the clinical radiology training program. Therefore, you are not required to upload your CV or referee details onto the myRANZCR portal.
To join the training program, you must secure employment in an accredited training position.
The College manages selection for clinical radiology in Victoria and New Zealand, including CV scoring, referee reports, and candidate preference matching. While the College provides employing sites with a ranked list of candidates, final employment decisions are made by the sites themselves.
All other jurisdictions manage their own recruitment independently. You can find recruitment dates and links in the table below.
Congratulations on receiving a position!
