The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) on the advice of the Breast Screening Advisory Committee (BIAC) are strongly advising that breast screening of asymptomatic women cease effective immediately.
Breast screen is an elective procedure and is a non-urgent population screening tool. It is unlikely that early disease, such as we would expect to find through such a Breast Screening program, would progress significantly during the next 6-12 months. The breast screening cohort is an ageing demographic at increased risk of adverse outcomes from COVID-19. Continuing with screening exposes patients, staff and their families to unnecessary risk at this time.
