NZ Doctors required for MCNZ Professional Conduct Committees

The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) are calling for doctors to sit on their Professional Conduct Committees. The MCNZ's principal purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public by providing mechanisms to ensure that doctors are competent and fit to practise.

If a concern is raised about a doctor’s conduct the MCNZ may establish a Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) to investigate the concern. By way of example, the concerns the MCNZ receives range from professional boundary breaches, criminal convictions, breaches of Council Statements (for example Good Medical Practice, Providing care to yourself and those close to you), and unprofessional behaviour.

The PCC is tasked with investigating the concerns raised about a doctor, which will often include reviewing patient medical records and analysing information relevant to that complaint. Part of the PCC investigation process often means that the PCC members will travel to meet with witnesses and/or the doctor being investigated. These meetings are usually conducted in person, however it will occasionally be more efficient in terms of time, cost and convenience for all parties to have these meetings held by video or teleconference. The Medical Council would remunerate the doctor for services provided at the rate of $120 per hour, and for travel costs at the rate of $60 per hour.
